Sooner of later Russia will have to pay reparations to Ukraine for Crimea. This was the view expressed (via Skype) by  Andrei Illarionov, a senior fellow at the Cato Institute in Washington and Putin’s former advisor for economic affairs, at a press conference of Russian intellectuals at the Ukrinform news agency, January 6.

” I expect  that this act of aggression, of annexation, will be  deemed unacceptable and that Crimea will be returned to its rightful owner — Ukraine. In this new situation, Russia will have to pay reparations for violating international peace and universally recognized borders and for the damage that Russia has caused Ukraine,” Illarionov said.

He emphasized that his personal position and the position of colleagues from the Committee of Solidarity with Maidan, as well as many other representatives of Russian intelligentsia, is that “the annexation of Crimea is a totally illegal act that violates agreements between Russia and Ukraine, the UN Charter, the Helsinki Accords, and the Budapest Memorandum.”

However, Illarionov noted that the opinion of Russian society is split on the Crimean issue. He believes there are many Russians who maintain that “Crimea has become Russian and this cannot be changed,” or else they propose that a new referendum be held, again under the protection of Russian bayonets.

When I read everything he has written in the past, he has proved to be clairvoyant indeed.

Well, russian took millions of Germans and their allies as payment, as reparations for the damage done in WWII.
So using russian logic and history, russia owes cash reparations to Chechnya, Ingushetia, Chechnya, Karelia (Finland), Poland, Belarus, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Ukraine, Georgia, Bulgaria, Romania, Maldova, Hungary, etc.

    Pay up you russian apes.

Naww, best we could hope for is let it go, recognize it as Russian in exchange for them getting out of Donbas, because loss of that is destroying Ukraine. Working on a Grand Bargain to end this miserable unstable situation, where everyone suffers.

But Illiaronov is great- asked him about his buddyship w Vlad, said he broke with him after Beslan horror. Search him for video at CMC

I think you will find that post-Russian Crimea would cease to be a thorn in the side of Ukraine as the discredited Sovoks lose influence and respect and as ethnic Ukrainians awaken from their decades of propaganda induced slumber.

What do you mean post-Russian- they will never give it back. It will be a thorn in Ukrs side for generations, fabled beloved vacationland, relatives + friends stuck in alien country with passage harder and harder, pro-Ukrs and poor beseiged Tatars bullied and abused, untold billions ($100?) stolen in property, industry, gas, gas reserves. But all that wasn’t enough for Puta- he had to invade the East to render Ukraine prostrate.

Your perspective is confused- what “alien” country? Crimea is UKRAINE.
UKRAINIANS, UKRAINE, CONQUERED CRIMEA AND GAVE IT TO RUSSIA, NOT VICE VERSA, Just as UKRAINIANS fought all of “russia’s” wars for 300 years up to 1991

The price Russia has to pay for its barbarian activities in Crimea and Donbas cannot be high enough!

Before taking for granted this article: Andrei Illarionov has a beef with Putin. Secondly, CATO is not libertarian think tank it used to be – it is a pathetic organ of war-mongering neo-cons and big government. And as such, it will take anyone and give him/her a voice as long as it is against Russia/Putin. Remember that disgusting “Pussy Riots” farce? Despicable bunch of talentless chicks denigrating Christian religion – enjoying zero support in Russia and overwhelming support by decadent western slavish media.
