Ukrainian Canadian Congress applauds Canada’s announcement of additional aid to Ukraine’s military

Canada is contributing $11mn in non-lethal aid to Ukraine’s military including essential cold weather gear – about 30,000 coats, 30,000 pairs of pants, 70,000 pairs of Gore-Tex boots and 4,500 pairs of gloves – as well as bomb disposal equipment, communications equipment, night and thermal vision equipment and binoculars, medical training and a mobile field hospital. Better yet, the first shipment arrives in a matter of days.

26 November, 2014 – OTTAWA – The Ukrainian Congress (UCC) welcomes the announcement by the Government of Canada on the provision of additional non-lethal military assistance to Ukraine’s military.

Canada’s Minister of National Defence, the Honourable Rob Nicholson, today announced,

“Our Government is committed to supporting the Ukrainian people as they fight for democracy and the sovereignty of their country in the face of the Putin regime’s military aggression. These contributions are a clear demonstration of our support for the people of Ukraine, and their pursuit of a secure and stable future.”

The assistance announced today will total $11 million, and includes:

  • $ 5 million for protective gear, including surplus Canadian Forces cold weather gear – about 30,000 coats, 30,000 pairs of pants, 70,000 pairs of Gore-Tex boots and 4,500 pairs of gloves;
  • $3 million for explosive ordinance disposal equipment;
  • $1 million for communications equipment;
  • $1 million for night and thermal vision equipment and binoculars;
  • $1 million for medical training, and a mobile field hospital.

The first shipment of equipment and supplies is scheduled to arrive in Ukraine by the end of November.

“The support provided by the Government of Canada will be of enormous help to the brave men and women in uniform in Ukraine at a critical time. As Ukraine continues to face invasion by the Russian Federation, this gear will increase the effectiveness of Ukraine’s military,” stated Paul Grod, National President of the UCC. “We are thankful to the Government of Canada for this latest assistance package and their steadfast support of the people of Ukraine as they continue their brave struggle to protect their country’s independence and territorial integrity.”

February 22 – The decision on whether to give Ukraine arms, U.S. President Barck Obama will make within the nearest days. This was stated on Saturday by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry during a joint press conference with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Great Britain, Phillip Hammondom, reported Reuters. "In the next few days, I expect, that President Obama will make a decision as to what further means will be used," said Kerry. He added that USA together with their European partners is deliberating also on the strengthening of sanctions against Russia for violating the Minsk agreements of February 12th. "We are not planning to sit with folded hands and to permit this kind of cynical behavior of threatening and ecroaching on the sovereignity of another country," said Kerry. USA Secretary of State emphasized that, in spite of the powerful propaganda, Russia will not be able to hide its actions.
