Petro Poroshenko has introduced new Defence Minister Stepan Poltorak to the General Staff, 5 Kanal TV reported at 3pm Kyiv time on 15 October. The president said that first and foremost the new minister has to remove bureaucratic obstacles to the proper supply for the army.

Petro Poroshenko‬ said the minister had a week to remove any redundant procedures. Also, the top commander wants a new military doctrine and other strategic documents concerning defence to be developed as soon as possible.

The president mentioned that he would nominate Stepan Poltorak for the post of defence minister after a new parliamentary coalition is formed.

Poroshenko said: “I object to permanent changes of the defence minister. If everything is okay, I am planning to nominate, using my constitutional powers, Stepan Tymofiyovych Poltorak for the post of defence minister in a new cabinet.

Poltorak was shown saying: “We all – I am talking to you, comrades generals and officers – have to work a lot. First of all, we need to learn to tell the truth, the truth about our condition and the truth about the things that are happening to be able to take the correct decisions.”
