NATO and Polish intelligence has determined that regular Russian troops are operating in the Donbas, said Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk during a session of the Polish Sejm, reports Polish Radio, August 27.

In light of this information, Poland must proceed very cautiously, Tusk believes, and Polish politicians must not indulge romantic notions that could weaken Poland’s position in world politics.

Tusk added that his country is ready to take those actions to support Ukraine that do not expose it to danger.

“For me the Ukrainian problem is primarily a security issue for Poland.” he stated, adding that Poland is unable to support Ukraine single-handedly and propose solutions that “sound high-minded but will not be adopted and will marginalize Poland.”

Tusk stressed that Poland must maintain its position in the international community and work to increase its influence on EU and NATO policies. He emphasized that Poland will increase the presence of NATO forces on its territory “step by step.” “The more Polish participation we have within NATO, the safer we will feel regarding the conflict in Ukraine,” he concluded.

The prime minister said he is counting on the support of Polish deputies to increase defense spending for 2016 by 2% of GDP.
