Terrorists abducted over 1,000 people since start of ATO, says Interior Ministry advisor

Since the beginning of the ATO there have been more than 1,000 reports of kidnappings by terrorists

According to the adviser to the Minister of the Interior, from April 1, to August 18, 2014, through monitoring of social media and the Internet, 1,026 reports of abduction and hostage-taking in the territory of Kharkiv, Donetsk and Luhansk region have been recorded.

“Within the stated number, 53 journalists were kidnapped, 174 police officers, 115 soldiers and guards, 40 deputies, members of political parties and heads of district (town) councils, 26 representatives of the OSCE, 6 prosecutors, 5 Security Service of Ukraine employees , 2 counsel and judges, 1 penitentiary service worker, and 602 persons within other categories.

Currently, the number of individuals who have been released and whose location is ascertained is 558 people,” said the Ministry  of Interior advisor.

He said that as of August 18, 2014, the fate 468 people remains unknown. Among them are, 4 journalists, 12 police officers, 65 soldiers and border guards, 13 deputies, members of political parties and heads of district (town) councils, 1 prosecutor, Security, lawyer and 1 judge, as well 370 persons in other categories.

“In addition, from April 1, 2014 in Donetsk and Luhansk regions, Internal Affairs departments have had 1,460 registered claims of untraceable disappearances of citizens.  As of August 18, 2014 within the stated number are 649 unsearched-for missing persons, “said Zorian Shkiriak.
