ATO map as of July 7

CONSOLIDATED NEWS FROM THE NATIONAL SECURITY AND DEFENSE COUNCIL (RNBO) NEWS & ANALYSIS CENTER

at 17:00 JULY 7, 2014

The border area

The Anti-Terrorist Operation (ATO) forces continue active efforts to free the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. However, the terrorists, who have suffered numerous casualties in people and military equipment, continue to resist, as RNBO speaker Andrei Lysenko reported on the July 7 afternoon briefing in Kyiv.

Today at 11:30 am near the Biryukove village in Luhansk Oblast, terrorists shelled a border patrol squad with mortars. As a result, one border guard was injured.

At noon, on the grounds of Amvrosiyivka border service department in Donetsk Oblast, border guards discovered a drone moving along the Ukrainian-Russian border.

Military action in the conflict zone

Engineering units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine continue to de-mine roads, bridges, buildings, and other infrastructure in the liberated towns. For example, in the city of Krasnyi Lyman, ten rounds of ammunition for a 152 mm howitzer and 3 RGD-5 hand grenades were destroyed. After engineering reconnaissance in Sloviansk, two truckloads of ammunition for various weapons systems and 2 kg of WWII-era explosives were discovered and relocated. One ton of TNT and 10 mortar rounds were revealed, and 3 antipersonnel and antitank mines were destroyed in Mykolayiv.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine arrested accomplices of terrorists in Sloviansk. They tried to receive humanitarian aid in the form of sausages in line with other city residents. However, they were caught by outraged citizens. Checks revealed that the detainees were involved in sabotage and subversion. In particular, one of them was seen at checkpoint with other mercenaries. Currently, the identity of the suspect and the extent of his involvement in sabotage, subversion, and other terrorist activities are being probed by law enforcement officials.

In Stakhanov, in Luhansk Oblast, about 100 terrorists from the Caucasus seized and began to fortify the building of the Faculty of Mining of the Ukrainian Engineering and Pedagogical Academy. They installed anti-aircraft installations on the roof of the building. And in the forest belt near the village of Thernove in Krasnodonskyi County and nearby suburban areas of the village Fabrichne in the Lutugino county, militants have installed a BM-Grad system.

There is also information that terrorists from Russia are being situated in children’s camps and recreation centers near the village of Velikyi Suchodil in Krasnodonskyi County, near the border with Russia.

The militant leaders try to maintain morale and fighting spirit among the mercenaries and intimidate the local population with their purportedly great assets at all costs. Today around noon they distributed information about an allegedly downed SU-25 plane of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. According to information received from the ATO forces, no aircraft was shot down. Moreover, all aircraft armed forces are in full combat readiness and performing tasks to successfully suppress the firing positions of the rebels and destroy their training bases and strongholds.

Displaced people

According to current information from the State Emergency Services, as of July 6, 2014 the total number of citizens of Ukraine who were moved from the ATO area is 33,376. The real number of displaced persons is higher due to the fact that many citizens moved in with relatives and friends.

We report that regional headquarters for displaced persons at local governing bodies of the State Emergency Services in Ukraine and in Kyiv are operating on a 24-hour basis. A single hotline telephone number for citizens who left the ATO was introduced: 101.

The website of the State Service, mns.gov.ua, also has a list of contact telephone numbers of regional headquarters.
